Singles, doubles or triples
Choose the mode at the start and enter the members of each team. Sixteen doubles teams mean 32 players; sixteen triples mean 48. The match count may be identical, while registration and on-site arrangements differ.
Explain what you mean by groups
When four teams each play all the others once, the group contains six games. That is the format used below. It is different from a qualifying pool with play-offs: the opponents and game counts differ. State your chosen format clearly in the event rules.
Identify terrains and available time
Name terrains so players can find them. Allow for walking, breaks and long games. Playing to a score does not guarantee a finish time. If you use a time limit, explain how the game ends and what happens to a tied score.
Publish clear results
Use pétanque results and the selected scoring profile, including games to 13 where appropriate. Review forfeits and special decisions. The public link brings fixtures, results and standings together so that players do not rely on conflicting boards.
A worked example
16 doubles teams in four groups
Each team plays its three group opponents once. The top two qualify for the quarter-finals.
