Organise a handball tournament: categories, courts and scores

Handball tournaments often bring several age groups together on a small number of courts. Clear rotations and appropriate playing times matter, alongside breaks and time for the officials.

Separate categories and playing durations

Create each category with its entry count and check the result profile for your event. Do not automatically use adult match durations for a youth competition. Explain how tied knockout games will be decided as well.

Choose a realistic format

Ten teams in two groups of five give everyone four group games. That already means 20 matches before the finals. If the hall is only available for a short period, revisit the format or timings before accepting more entries.

Make rotations easy to follow

Name courts as they are labelled at the venue. Allow for team changes, the scorer’s table and breaks. Review the daily schedule and how categories follow each other. Check qualifiers’ recovery time between their last group game and their semi-final.

Validate scores and match decisions

Handball has dedicated period results and match decisions. Review overtime or other tie-breaking procedures for the selected profile. A forfeit should not appear as an ordinary played match: record the appropriate decision, then check the standings.

A worked example

Ten teams in two groups

Two groups of five, with the top two qualifying for semi-finals and a final.

Ten teams in two groups
Group stage2 × 10 = 20 matches
Final stage3 matches
Total23 matches

A third-place game would make 24 matches. Include its changeover time and the officials’ availability too.

Step by step in TournoiFacile

  1. Choose the sport and entrants

Select your sport when creating a tournament. Name the competition and enter the categories and numbers of entrants. You can add final names later. Open the custom format if your event needs a different structure.

  2. Prepare the matches

Choose the groups and what follows them. Add the pitches, courts or tables you can actually use, together with the playing days and available times. Allow for breaks and changeovers.

  3. Check the schedule

Generate the programme, then check rest times and each category’s start times. Manual placement also lets you work by round, phase or category. Review estimated times before publishing.

  4. Record and share results

Enter results using the scoring screen for your sport. Share the public link so that participants and spectators can find fixtures, scores and standings on their phones.

Practical questions

Can categories have different match lengths?

Yes. Check the durations and result profile for each category before generating and publishing the programme.

Do spectators need an app?

The public link opens in a phone browser and shows the published schedule and results.

These guides describe the workflows available in TournoiFacile. The figures are planning examples, not guaranteed running times. For a sanctioned competition, check the rules and requirements with your governing body.
